Bechtheim Riesling – the Power of the Soil and Climate

The grapes for the Bechtheim Riesling come from the best sites around Bechtheim, whose varied soils and microclimates form the basis of a village wine with real character. The Geyersberg, Stein, Rosengarten and Hasensprung sites shape this wine in particular: weathered limestone in the Geyersberg, loess loam over limestone in the Rosengarten, clay ferrisol in the Hasensprung and pure limestone in the Stein. This geological variety, combined with the Bechtheim climate, gives the Riesling depth, precision and expression. To raise quality, only two bunches are left per vine, so that the strength of the vine concentrates in a few particularly aromatic berries. Picking is by hand without exception. The grapes are then laid carefully into small standard crates and brought to the winery, where they are trodden gently by foot so that the juice can macerate with the skins over several hours. The mash is then pressed gently in several passes, to preserve the full potential of the fruit.
